Why Website Speed Matters: A Real Before-and-After Website Performance Case Study

See how website optimization improved mobile performance from 62 to 96 and cut load time from 10.3 to 2.0 seconds.

A slow website creates a simple problem for a business: potential customers have to wait before they can see what you do, find your phone number or contact you.

That matters even more when you are paying to send people to the website through advertising.

We recently completed a website performance project on the 216 Marketing website that gave us a very clear before-and-after example of how much difference technical optimization can make.

The visual design did not need to be replaced. The website did not need to be rebuilt from scratch. We needed to identify what was slowing it down, remove unnecessary bottlenecks and make sure the important parts of the site still worked correctly afterward.

Website Performance Before Optimization

Before the optimization work, mobile testing showed a performance score of 62.

The biggest problem was Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, which measured 10.3 seconds.

In plain English, LCP measures how long it takes for the main visible content on a page to load. A business owner does not need to understand the technical details. The important part is that a customer should not have to wait ten seconds to see the main part of a website.

Total Blocking Time was 90 milliseconds. That measures how long the browser is busy processing work that can delay buttons, menus and other parts of the page from becoming responsive.

The site was functional, but the mobile experience had obvious room for improvement.

What We Changed

Website performance problems rarely come from one giant mistake. More often, they are a collection of smaller issues involving stylesheets, scripts, plugins, images, caching and the order in which different parts of the page load.

We worked through those issues carefully instead of simply turning on every available optimization setting and hoping nothing broke.

That last part matters.

A website that earns a perfect speed score but breaks the contact form is not an optimized website.

Forms, navigation, layouts and important customer actions should be checked as performance changes are made.

The Before-and-After Results

After optimization, the mobile performance score increased from 62 to 96.

Largest Contentful Paint dropped from 10.3 seconds to 2.0 seconds.

Total Blocking Time dropped from 90 milliseconds to 0.

Website Performance Results

Mobile Performance: 62 → 96

Largest Contentful Paint: 10.3 sec → 2.0 sec

Total Blocking Time: 90 ms → 0 ms

Those numbers are useful because they document the improvement instead of relying on whether a website simply “feels faster.”

Why Website Speed Matters to a Business Owner

Most business owners do not need another technical report full of website terminology.

They need to know whether a problem could be making it harder for customers to do business with them.

If someone visits a contractor’s website because their furnace stopped working, a pipe is leaking or their roof was damaged in a storm, they probably are not interested in watching a loading animation.

They want to know whether the company provides the service they need and how to contact them.

A faster website removes unnecessary friction from that process.

Website Speed and Paid Advertising

Website performance becomes particularly important when a company is paying for traffic.

An advertising campaign can successfully reach the right person, show the right message and earn the click. If the visitor then reaches a slow or difficult website, the advertising has already done its job.

The website is now responsible for the next step.

That is why we do not look at advertising and websites as completely separate projects.

If you are paying for traffic, the landing experience should support the advertising rather than work against it.

Website Speed and Search Visibility

Website performance is also part of the larger search experience.

Speed alone does not guarantee higher Google rankings, and we would never tell a business owner that improving one performance metric automatically moves a website to the top of the search results.

Search visibility depends on many factors, including useful content, relevance, authority, technical quality and competition.

But there is little benefit in having a search-friendly website that makes customers wait unnecessarily once they arrive.

Mobile Performance Deserves Extra Attention

For many local businesses, the customer’s first interaction with the website happens on a phone.

That customer may be standing in a driveway, sitting in a car, comparing contractors from the couch or trying to solve an urgent problem.

The website needs to work well in that environment.

That means more than shrinking a desktop design to fit a smaller screen. Pages should load quickly, phone numbers should be easy to find, buttons should work and forms should be simple to complete.

A Fast Website Still Has to Work

This is one of the most important lessons from website performance work.

You should not optimize a website in a vacuum.

We check important functions after performance changes because aggressive script or stylesheet optimization can occasionally affect menus, forms and other interactive features.

The objective is not to win a speed-test screenshot.

The objective is to create a faster website that still does everything the business and its customers need it to do.

Measure Before and After

If you are going to invest time or money into website performance, document the starting point first.

Save the original performance results. Record the testing conditions. Then compare them with the results after the work is complete.

That provides actual evidence of what changed.

At 216 Marketing, that same philosophy applies to more than website speed.

We want to measure what is happening, make improvements and then look at the results instead of assuming the work helped.

It is the same approach we use when reviewing search visibility, advertising, lead quality and other parts of a company’s digital marketing.

Website Performance Is Part of the Bigger Picture

A fast website will not fix a bad offer, weak content or advertising aimed at the wrong customers.

But a slow website can create unnecessary friction even when everything else is working.

That is why performance belongs inside the larger marketing conversation.

The goal is not simply to make a website faster.

The goal is to make it easier for a potential customer to find the business, understand what it offers and take the next step.

Need to Know How Your Website Is Performing?

If your website feels slow, performs poorly on mobile or is receiving paid traffic without producing the results you expect, the first step is figuring out what is actually happening.

216 Marketing can review website performance, identify practical improvements and help determine where technical issues may be creating unnecessary friction for customers.

Website Speed FAQs

Why does website speed matter for a small business?

A faster website makes it easier for customers to see your services, navigate the site and contact the business without unnecessary waiting. This is especially important for mobile visitors and customers looking for urgent local services.

Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, measures how quickly the main visible content on a webpage appears. In practical terms, it helps show how long a visitor waits before the important part of the page becomes visible.

Total Blocking Time measures how long a webpage is busy processing tasks that can delay interaction. Lower blocking time can help menus, buttons, forms and other interactive parts of a website respond more quickly.

No. Website speed is only one part of a much larger search picture. Content quality, relevance, authority, technical health and competition also matter. Improving speed removes a potential weakness but does not guarantee higher rankings.

A slow landing experience can create friction after someone clicks an advertisement. Improving website performance does not guarantee cheaper clicks or more conversions, but it gives paid visitors a faster and easier experience after they reach the site.

Mobile performance deserves significant attention because many local customers visit business websites from their phones. Pages should load quickly, navigation should be simple and important actions such as calling or completing a form should be easy.

It can if optimization settings are applied too aggressively. Scripts and stylesheets sometimes control forms, navigation and other interactive features, which is why important website functions should be tested after performance changes.

Measure the website before making changes and test it again afterward under similar conditions. Comparing performance scores, loading measurements and functionality provides much better evidence than simply saying the website feels faster.

I engaged 216 Marketing at the end of 2019 and experienced positive SEO results almost immediately. Brett is awesome. The thing I have appreciated the most is that Brett walked me through why things like a website refresh & domain transfer before the SEO began in earnest were so important - his suggestions and work have been completely on-point and everything is going really well. No drama or pushy customer service - Brett is simply interested in helping you and your business and offers helpful suggestions along the way.
